Hola padres! What a fun week we have had! All classes have taken the quiz and I am working on grading them. I will have them back to you as soon as I can. Most of our time this week has been spent on our Day of the Dead word searches. The third graders had one in English and one in Spanish to do. I allowed them to work in groups and they seemed to really enjoy this.
We will wrap up our study of Peru tomorrow and will start in November looking at Bolivia.
Next week we will review our question words as well as our adjectives as we didn't get a chance to do much of that this week.
Have a wonderful weekend!

The Book of Life, question words and a quiz!
Hola padres! What a fun week as we have started our study of question words along with a study of the Day of the Dead. To help us work on the question words, I had them fill out a detective sheet that asked them who, what, where and when about the Day of the Dead. I had read to them a short article and showed them pictures of different Day of the Dead celebrations. This was a great way to integrate two aspects of our Spanish study.
Next week, we will be having a quiz. Ms. Uphoff's class will be quizzed on Tuesday the 28th and Ms. Iacuelli and Carlyon's class will be quizzed on Thursday the 30th. All classes should have their study guides today. The quiz will be matching over the prepositions with some bonus questions on the Day of the Dead and adjectives and how they are used differently in Spanish than in English. If the scholars have been paying attention and following directions, they will do just fine.
Next week, we will continue our study of question words and the Day of the Dead.
In terms of a way to work some Spanish culture into your life and help reinforce what we are learning in class, there is a great movie out right now called The Book of Life. I took my kids to see it last Friday and it was a wonderful depiction of the Day of the Dead. It was full of color, music and whimsy. I enjoyed it a lot and think that it would be a great way for the scholars to see outside of the classroom the impact the Hispanic culture has on our lives. I'm sure they would love it. Have a great weekend!

Our first week back!
Hola padres! It is good to be back with the scholars as we have dived back into Spanish! We began learning about adjectives this week and were able to incorporate our new knowledge into a worksheet that used most both adjectives and prepositions. This worksheet took both class times this week to complete and I am excited that the scholars were able for the most part to figure out what they needed to draw on their own with just a bit of help from me.
On Wednesday, Ms. Uphoff's class learned about Peru and we had the special privilege of Ms. Uphoff sharing pictures from her trip there a couple of years ago. The scholars really enjoyed what she shared!
If you are looking for a way for your scholars to practice Spanish at home, I have come across a really great app called duolingo. My husband has been using it to work on his Spanish and it is truly amazing. The app is intuitive and you can play against friends if thats what motivates you. Like so many things in life, there is not magic pill that you can take that will make you able to speak Spanish in a week, but this app is the closest to that that I have encountered. I think it can be used for children as well, so download it and let me know what you think!
Next week, we plan to move on to question words and also start learning about the Day of the Dead. We are heading into some exciting weeks with the holidays coming up which are rich in cultural tradition for those who speak Spanish!

the end of the quarter!
Hola padres! It is crazy to believe that we are indeed at the end of the first quarter! Although my time with 3rd grade has been short, I have enjoyed getting to know them. I look forward to working with them for the rest of the year.
This week we have wrapped up our study on prepositions and also our study of countries. I have been able to give each third grade class a lesson on Venezuela and Ecuador and will move on to Peru when we get back from fall break. We have learned so much and it has been so exciting to share all of this with them. Ask them what they've learned about each country, I'm sure they will be excited to share their knowledge with you.
When we get back we will start on adjectives and see how well the scholars learn how to describe nouns in Spanish. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement. Have a wonderful fall break!
